Brief

Native Industries was commissioned to develop a character design proposal for Mokoia Intermediate that reflected the kura’s kawa and tikanga through visual storytelling. The brief focused on creating tūpuna-inspired characters that expressed key values of creation, life, and conduct, while giving the kura a strong and culturally grounded visual foundation for future storytelling.

Project

Our approach combined conceptual design, moodboards, and character development grounded in kaupapa Māori values. We developed Uenukukōpako to embody resilience, strength, and determination, and Rangiteaorere to represent humility, wisdom, strategy, and leadership through service. Alongside these, we explored wāhine concepts to bring balance, strength, and diversity into the visual language. Each design was shaped to reflect the kura’s tikanga and kawa with cultural accuracy and resonance, supported by illustrated concept sheets to guide future creative development. The outcome was a set of powerful visual concepts that captured both the strength and humility of Mokoia’s tūpuna.
